The Hill We Climb: Inspiring Words to the Nation

by Lily

On Wednesday’s inauguration, the new President was sworn into office, but what followed was by far the highlight of the afternoon. Amanda Gorman, 22 year old poet from Los Angeles and Harvard graduate, recited her poem “The Hill We Climb” and is going down in history as the youngest inaugural poet. Her words sparked inspiration and underlined the President’s calls for unity, justice, peace, and progress for the years to come:

Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true,

That even as we grieved, we grew.

That even as we hurt, we hoped.

That even as we tired, we tried that we will forever be tied together.

Victorious!

Not because we will never again know defeat, but because we will never again sow division.

This poem held significant meaning as it encompassed the struggles our nation faces; division, violence, inequality, greif, fear, and catastrophe. But Amanda had something to say about that:

So, while once we asked how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe,

Now we assert, how could catastrophe possibly prevail over us?

Her words demanded that America stay strong and united through the perils we endure, such as the attack on our democracy which we witnessed just 2 weeks ago. "I wanted it to be a message of hope and unity. And I think that Wednesday [day of Capitol insurrection] for me really just underscored how much that was needed," Gorman said in an interview with CBS News. And she succeeded. Since she read her poem, her books have sprung to the bestseller list and her message is surely a genesis of change.
