Everything YOU Need to Know About Splatoon 3

by Finn, Grade 7

With the final reveal of the Direct, Splatoon 3, the 3rd game in Nintendo’s latest IP was revealed. And here’s a summary of every Splatoon fan’s (Including me) reaction: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. Anyways, a decent amount of things were revealed in the trailer and elsewhere on the Internet, so let’s get into it and everything you need to know about Splatoon 3.

Customization

Right off the bat, the trailer cuts to character custom that you’ll have in the final game. First, both Inklings and Octolings seem to be unlocked straight from the start. Secondly, there’s no longer any genders, but more like gender preferences, with the main difference being eyebrows. Nothing will be locked by choosing genders, as all hairstyles and everything else will be available based on if you chose Inkling or Octoling. Next, you get to pick a skin tone, with no real major differences from Splatoon 2 apart from the fact that a few extra options have been added. Next, eye colors are again the same but I believe 6 more options this time. And then, hair. Like I said, genders don’t longer have exclusive hair, but it's rather separated if you chose Inkling or Octoling. There seems to be 4 more hairstyles this game, and possibly more as we didn’t get to see the full selection. But all returning hairstyles are either confirmed to be there or are just easy to assume that they’ll be there. And finally, legwear. Not much has changed, with every returning legwear being available, with only one being added, which people have already called the Toad pants.

Little Buddy : )

Next, the trailer reveals you can customize the hair of a Salmanoid near you, which they call your little buddy. That appears to be the only form of customization for him, and it's not clear what he exactly does, but he seems to be your companion, following you around everywhere.

2D Sections

They then cut to the Inkling they selected running in what seems to be a 2D area, with the Eiffel Tower being flipped in the background. A cutscene also plays with you and your little buddy around that area. That’s all we know for now about it though, and I’m not sure if there will be more 2D areas like it.

They then hop onto a train, which seems to be a transition (And a good one for me) to the next section:

The New City

As the Inkling exits the train, it fades into revealing parts of the new city, showing parts of the lobby, Sheldon’s shop, and possibly a new feature but a requested one: apartments. That’s all we’ve seen of it so far, so there could be more that we don’t know about yet.

Gameplay Changes

Right from the beginning of the trailer, we see some gameplay changes, with the Inkling using a bow weapon. Then, as the logo fades out, we see our first glimpse of actual Turf War gameplay. First, the spawning/respawning method has seemed to have changed, with you on your floating individual spawning platforms instead of one big grounded spawning platform. You then seem to be able to select where you’ll be sent when the countdown/cooldown ends. You then are launched straight into the map and the game begins. We then begin to see the bow weapon actually being used, with a 3 spread vertical shot that seems it could have some distance, possibly acting like a Charger. We then see a squid dash out of the way of the bow shot, which we’ll get back to in a bit. We then see someone dash up a wall covered in their ink using an at least slightly altered Blaster, which we’ll also get back to. We’re then shown an Inkling using what appears to be their special that seems to shoot ink balls and stopping when the special runs out. Other weapons seemed to be at least altered in their appearance along with the Blaster, which then cuts to the triumphant return of the Inkzooka, a special from the first game that was missing in Splatoon 2. Oh yeah, there also seems to be a crab sub weapon, acting like a Seeker from the first game.

Release Date/Details

As the trailer cuts to a back screen, we’re shown text saying “Back Into the Ink” and then “2022”, meaning that it’ll release in 2022. Besides that, we have no future release date/details, so we’ll just have to wait for more.

Oh, and…

After the Direct, Nintendo went on various social media platforms to share more details about Splatoon 3. So, I collected all important information they said and here it is:

  • The new city is called Splatsville, with the surrounding desert areas being called the Splatlands.

  • This game takes place after the Final Splatfest in Splatoon 2, meaning it’s not a prequel and is just a continuation of the series.

  • The dash move used for dodging the arrow is called a Squid Roll with the wall dash being called a Squid Surge.

  • Another special weapon which seems to be a sub weapon launcher, meaning that there could be more sub weapons we have yet to learn about.

And that’s about it for other news.

So that’s all we know so far about Splatoon 3. With the popularity of the Switch, it’s shaping up to be a popular and big game. Anyways, back to AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
