Breaking World News: Terror in Palestine

by Lily

Overview:

  • Israel-Palestine have had continuing conflict over ownership of land

  • Palestine has very little territory left

  • Israel is attacking and invading Palestine

  • The U.S. supplies money and aid to Israeli military

Since the 1700s, Palestine and Israel have experienced conflicts grounded in colonization, Jewish immigration, and control over territory. In the latest hours, the world has witnessed what some would consider to be the gateway to civil war. Starting on May sixth of this year, tension has started to accumulate more heavily between the two regions. On May eleventh, explosions erupted in the local town of Gaza in Palestine, causing the deaths of “dozens”, according to Al Jazeera’s reporting. Palestine countered this by sending “hundreds of rockets into Israel” in defense (CNN). Videos show disturbing images of black smoke clouds, fire, and rallying citizens.

The United States plays an important role in all of this; for years, America has supplied billions of dollars of military aid to Israel, who’s government and leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, is attacking the Palestinians for their land, which they have been slowly and illegally consuming for a long time leading up to these most previous events. Even after the United Nations Security Council Resolution 242 (which forced Israel to withdraw from Palestinitan territories after the 1967 Six-Day War/June War), almost 54 years later problems of territory ownership between Palestine and Israel persist. One headline reads, “US must put ‘brakes on the Israelis’ as violence rises”; President Biden has yet to address the issue, but the U.S. is in part responsible for the damage done to Palestine and action on this issue from America has had yet to ensue, if it does at all.

In the meantime, social and news media has blown up this story, some demanding the U.S. government to step up to partake in dealing with this issue, others calling on Netanyahu to cease all action on Palestine. Other nations such as the European Union and the Arab Nations are likely to support Palestine since they have supplied aid to them in the past, however bloodshed continues in the Middle East. Will this be the final outbreak of violence that will serve peace to Israel-Palestine? Is this only the beginning? As Palestinian men, women and children are killed by explosions or Israeli artillery, no one can predict how this recurrence of violence will resolve.
